A response has been tabled by the Australian government in response to a report from the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications with relation to cybercrime, which is a growing concern around the world. The response to the report, entitled ‘Hackers, Fraudsters and Botnets: Tackling the Problem of Cyber Crime’, was tabled by Attorney-General, Robert McClelland and the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy.

The report contained over thirty recommendations and outlined a more strategic approach to tackling cybercrime in Australia. Issues that the report addressed included cyber security, consumer protection and privacy, and a number of related issues. This comes after significant steps have already been taken by the government in relation to cybercrime.

Senator Conroy stated: “The internet is now an integral part of Australians’ everyday lives. The digital economy is essential to Australia’s productivity, global competitive standing and social well-being. While the internet offers many benefits, there are also a range of safety and security risks associated with its use.”

McClelland added: “The constantly evolving nature of cyber crime will continue to require smart and innovative responses from government. The Government’s response to the report recognises that governments, industry and individuals all have a role in taking action to mitigate online risks. This includes continuing to work on our vision for a secure, resilient and trusted cyber environment through the Cyber Security Strategy and to support domestic and international cooperation on preventing, investigating and prosecuting cyber crimes.”
