Campaign launched to keep NBN jobs in Melbourne
With Tony Abbott stating that he wants to put an end to the plans to have the heart of the NBN in Melbourne a campaign has now been launched by Victorians to try and change his mind
Tony Abbott has made it clear that he wants to put an end to the plans of Labor to have the heart of the National Broadband Network in Melbourne. As a result of this people in Victoria have launched a campaign to try and change Abbott’s mind and ensure that the hub of the NBN remains in Melbourne.
John Brumby, the Premier, has said that he has launched a new campaign that people can join through the social networking website Facebook if they want to back the plan to have Melbourne as the centre of the National Broadband Network. He said that he wants consumers to use the group to make their views about the NBN known to Abbotts.
Brumby stated: “If Tony Abbott gets his way he’ll scrap the National Broadband Network and the 700 highly skilled jobs that are set to be based in Melbourne’s national operations centre. Melbourne is regarded as the ICT capital of Australia and with the hub of the National Broadband Network we are set for an exciting future. But this future is under direct threat from the Liberal and National parties. Tony Abbott doesn’t understand the internet and obviously doesn’t care about Victoria’s ICT jobs. Even worse – Ted Baillieu refuses to stand up to him so now it’s up to every Victorian to make their voice heard before Mr Abbott gets his way and destroys the National Broadband Network.”
He added: “The National Broadband Network is more than better download speeds – it means isolated Victorians can keep in contact better, businesses around Victoria can compete better on the international stage, we can deliver better education to our classrooms and medical researchers can work together better to fight disease. Over 230 Victorian cities, towns and suburbs will be left with a second rate internet service under Tony Abbott, holding back Victorian businesses and putting Victorian jobs at risk. Don’t let Tony Abbott take our NBN jobs from Melbourne.”
