It has been reported recently that concerns have been expressed by the Australian Press Council with regards to the way in which the federal government’s National Broadband Network in Australia has been covered and portrayed in reports in the Daily Telegraph. It is claimed that in a relatively short period of time three articles in the publication had made “inaccurate or misleading assertions” about the NBN.

The Australian Press Council has confirmed in a recent statement that it has noted a complaint that was made about three articles about the NBN that were published by the Daily Telegraph in June and July of this year. The articles looked at different aspects of the National Broadband Network and one was also printed in other linked publications.

The complainant is said to have highlighted the inaccuracies of the article and the Australian Press Council determined that the content of the article could be construed as unfair and misleading. Whilst the Daily Telegraph said that the article was based on information available to them at the time the Press Council said that the publication should have made more effort to get up to date information.

Other newspapers in the past have also been slated over the way in which they have covered the National Broadband Network, with Communications Minister Stephen Conroy speaking out in 2010 asking coalition members not to believe all that they read about the NBN in papers such as The Australian.
