In a recent speech the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy has spoken out about how the National Broadband Network will benefit many Australians and transform their lives. He referred to many different places around Australia, commenting on how the NBN would help to change the lives of residents and businesses in those areas.

Referring to New South Wales and the ACT he said: “The NBN will transform the way people live, work and receive health and education services across New South Wales and the ACT, especially those in rural and regional areas. Minnamurra and Kiama Downs, and an area west of Armidale, including the University of New England, are two of the five first release sites where the NBN is being rolled out on mainland Australia.”

He also spoke about the effect in the Northern Territories, stating: “Casuarina in Darwin is one of the second release sites where the NBN will be rolled out on mainland Australia. Construction on all of these sites is scheduled to begin later this year.” He added: “A critical link in this fibre backbone network is the $125.5 million Darwin to Toowoomba backbone link part which is on schedule for completion later this year. The investment in the Northern Territory will be $46.7 million as part of the overall RBBP funding. Families and small businesses in Darwin and communities along the link can expect to receive faster and cheaper broadband as more competition enters the market.”

With regards to Western Australia he added: “Victoria Park in Perth, Geraldton and Mandurah are three of the second release sites where the NBN is being rolled out on mainland Australia. Construction on all of these sites is scheduled to begin later this year.”
