Earlier this week the Federal Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Stephen Conroy, announced the completion of a broadband project in the regional Victoria area, which links a range of town including Mildura, Swan Hill, Kerang and Shepparton. The completion means that the area could be in line to see internet connections become both faster and cheaper according to reports.

Of course, most residents and businesses in the area are keen to be able to benefit from faster, more affordable broadband services and with the Broadband Backbone project this is something that could become a reality. There is now a 1150km fibre optic network linking the towns and this is set to increase internet options for regional users, as it will bring in further competition.

Conroy stated: ”It means faster and cheaper broadband throughout key regional locations in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. This fibre backbone infrastructure will give retail service providers the opportunity to offer better broadband services for around 137,000 people along the route.”

Conroy highlighted the benefits that had already been seen in other areas following a Link completed in Geraldton earlier this year. He said that this had so far resulted in speeds becoming around ten times faster and download limits doubling. At the same time, according to Conroy, prices had remained level so that better service was not costing consumers any extra.
