Fibre optic internet access could surpass DSL over next few years
Officials from an analyst firm have recently stated that it is possible that fibre based broadband access could pass DSL over the next few years if the National Broadband Network rollout continues successfully.
According to the analyst firm Telsyte fibre optic internet access could overtake DSL access by around 2015 if the National Broadband Network rollout across Australia continues successfully. The claim was made in the recent Fixed Broadband and Voice Report, which found that by 2017 NBN Co fibre would be used by around 4.2 million homes.
However, the company did say that these predictions were based on the Labor government staying in power and the ongoing rollout of the National Broadband Network in Australia. The report said that if the Opposition was elected fibre based broadband might be used by just seven hundred thousand customers by that time.
The report stated: “By the end of 2015, NBN Co fibre will match the penetration of DSL with about three million active connections to homes and businesses if the rollout is uninterrupted.”
Telsyte director of research consulting, Chris Coughlan, said: “If the NBN Co is allowed to continue by the federal government, optical fibre connections will connect some 4.2 million premises by the end of 2017. However, if the Coalition wins power in 2013, we expect the new government will stall the National Broadband Network [NBN] while it goes through the Productivity Commission and policy reviews for the initial term of government.”
