Location of regional NBN phase one rollouts to be released in Australia

July 1st, 2009 by Rob

Even with all the inevitable delays and holdups Senator Stephen Conroy could still announce September as the date that the building of the National Broadband Network could begin.

The regional locations that will form the beginning of the building of the National Broadband Network that will cost an estimated $43 billion will soon be announced by the Federal Government according to a recent statement from Stephen Conroy, the Communication Minister.

In a local government speech recently Senator Conroy said “We will be commencing a competitive tender process for rollouts… with the expectation that construction will begin as soon as September,” Conroy said in a speech to local government. We want to move quickly to make these deployments and foster competition in regional Australia.”

The first step in building the $43 billion national network will be regional rollout that will cost around $250 million and is designed to strengthen and improve the backbone (or backhaul as it is more commonly known) in the rural parts of Australia.

Although these dates have been provided by Senator Carter there are a huge number of factors that must be taken into account before any work on the National Broadband Network can take place. The biggest hurdle in getting the work on the NBN started is finding the vendors and service providers to help with the roll out. Major providers like Telstra and Optus are the most likely considerations as they already have a massive nationwide infrastructure in place and this will make the initial build process far faster and easier than building the network from the ground up.

The vendors and equipment manufacturers that are being considered will be providing technology ranging from fixed-line fibre optics to Wi-Fi and 3G Mobile broadband equipment to allow the new NBN to reach as much of the Australian population as possible.
