Major capacity upgrade undertaken in Tasmania

Apr 13 2010 / By Richard Patterson

The previously underserved area of Tasmania became the first to start benefitting from the National Broadband Network, and major capacity upgrades have now been undertaken to cope with the rising demand for broadband in the area.

When it came to broadband services Tasmania was previously amongst the most underserved areas, putting the businesses and residents in the area at a real disadvantage compared to those in areas that had relatively good access to broadband services. However, this is something that the Rudd government’s National Broadband Network planned to iron out, and recently Tasmania became the first area to start benefitting from the NBN.

The demand for broadband in the area has now increased according to reports, and in order to ensure that operators, enterprises, and the government can provide the capacity needed for this increased demand upgrades have been made to the TasGovNet optical fibre backbone network, which connects a number of areas including Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport.

The capacity upgrade has been carried out by Aurora Energy and Nokia Siemens Networks. An official from Aurora said: “If we want to ensure our stake in this market, we have to scale up quickly and cost efficiently. Having worked closely with Nokia Siemens Networks before, we had full confidence in its ability to complement global experience with local support abilities. Nokia Siemens Networks tailored a solution for us that met the market needs for high bandwidth.”

A spokesperson for Nokia Seimens added: “By undertaking this cost-effective evolution to increase capacities from hundreds of megabits per second to tens of gigabits per second, Aurora will be able to help its customers meet its need for seamless high-end broadband applications. We have a long history of providing solutions to the Tasmanian market, including Aurora Energy. By partnering with Aurora again we are helping it make the most of this market’s potential.”
