In order to use its fibre optic network in the future the Tasmanian is government will be investing $12.7 million in Aurora Energy, its strategic telecommunications partner, although November 2008 was the date originally set for this investment to take place.
The Tasmanian Electronic Commerce Centre (TECC) will also get $1 million in support over the next three years and to help the setup of the NBN a total on $1 million has also been set aside for advisory and legal support. Although no firm figures have been put on the initiative yet, the Government are also planning the creation of a Digital Futures Advisory Committee that will look into any NBN related opportunities that may arise.
Following suggestions made by the expert panel used by the Federal Government, it has said that it will speed through any negotiations with the Tasmanian Government for the deployment of a FTTP network offering next generation wireless services around July 2009 when it made it announcements to build the $43 billion NBN back on the 7th April.
The construction of a Fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network using the combined efforts of Aurora Energy and the Tasmanian Government, which would offer users speeds as high as 100Mbps and would provide access 200 000 businesses and homes throughout Tasmania and would also connect 90 percent of schools and all hospitals, was announced the day after in Devonport by Prime minister Kevin Rudd, Communications minister Stephen Conroy and David Bartlett, the Tasmanian premier.
The Tasmanian premier, David Bartlett said when announcing this move “Hundreds of millions of dollars is expected to be spent on construction, there will also be opportunities to attract additional investment in support infrastructure, specialised training facilities, dedicated research and development teams and a host of national and international suppliers looking to prepare for the national roll-out.”
He also added “The TECC was a key to the success of the TasCOLT Fibre-to-the-Home pilot project, upon which Tasmania’s successful NBN proposal was based. The TECC has a vital future role to play in ensuring Tasmania maximises the opportunities that will arise as the NBN rolls-out across the state.”
