A warning has recently been issued in Australia by the Minister for Broadband Communications and the Digital Economy, Stephen Conroy, who said that door to door scammers were now in operation in Australia, and were trying to sell consumers false connections to the National Broadband Network. Conroy has urged people to be vigilant and to take care that they are not ripped off by these scammers.

The issue was raised by Digital Tasmania, and Conroy has reiterated warnings to consumers in Tasmania. The minister stated: “People can protect themselves from such scams by applying common sense rules, asking for appropriate identification and ensuring appropriate checks are made.”

Advice has already been provided by Digital Australia in order to help Tasmanian consumers to deal with scam artists that they may encounter. They are advised to refuse any demand for cash or deposits and also demand written quotes and details of the company making the offer. They should then check with Consumer Affairs to see whether the company is legitimate.

NBN Co is also set to launch an information campaign, and Conroy stated: “The campaign will provide information concerning the timing for provision of new services, the nature of the services, and the action that consumers will need to take in order to receive services over the NBN. Residents and businesses will then have the opportunity to consider a range of retail providers of services and their different offers.”

Have you come across one of these NBN scammers?
