It was announced recently by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, that the newest National Broadband Network broadband champion was Australian Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Graeme Innes.

Mr Innes has said that he is proud to be a broadband champion, which will involve raising awareness of the many benefits of the National Broadband Network.

Conroy stated: “I’m thrilled Graeme has agreed to partner with us to help inform people of the benefits of high-speed broadband, particularly the opportunities available to Australians living with a disability. To ensure all Australians, at home and work, receive the full benefits of the digital economy available through the NBN we need the support of prominent Australians like Graeme. The broadband champions are a group of committed Australians, experts in their field, who are passionate about promoting the enhanced opportunities high-speed broadband provides. The NBN will provide Australians living with a disability with new opportunities to connect to the community, break down old barriers and to participate in ways they never have.”

Mr Innes added: “I am delighted to have been invited to be a broadband champion—not merely because of my enthusiasm for computer wizardry, but because of what the advancement of technology can do for Australians with a disability. The NBN is a game-changer for the quality of everyday life for people with a disability and more so for those of us geographically and socially isolated.”
