optus 250x142 Optus wants confirmation of spectrum for LTECommunications giant Optus has recently stated that given the significantly higher speeds that users will be able to benefit from through LTE technology it has become necessary to provide more certainty on the next stage of spectrum availability.

According to a recent report the Australian communications giant Optus has recently called for more certainty on the next stage of spectrum availability following its successful trials into Long Term Evolution or LTE. The trials undertaken by the telco into LTE showed that it could reach speeds that were up to ten times faster than those currently achieved on it 3G networks.

The communications giant has been running trials of LTE in Gordon and Pymble, which are suburbs of northern Sydney. Optus spent some time demonstrating the capabilities of its LTE technology following its trials, enabling observers to see how it could be beneficial in terms of streaming 3D video and video conferencing.

Optus director of mobile core engineering Andrew Smith said: “Spectrum is a very key part of the LTE. It is very critical that we get some certainty, from a government and regulator sense, as to how the critical spectrum that LTE will best operate in will come to the marketplace.”

He also said that LTE would complement the National Broadband Network, and added that no matter what happened with the fixed line environment LTE would continue to move forward. He said that increasing use of mobile broadband technology had put a lot of pressure on mobile broadband networks, and that it was becoming increasingly vital to bring in Fourth Generation technology to cope with this rising demand.
