Telstra sends warning of emails scam to broadband users
Hoax emails have become more and more prevalent over recent years as a result of an increasing number of people having broadband services, and a warning has now been issued to Telco urging its customers to be on the lookout for hoax emails.
The rising number of people that have broadband and internet access these days has unfortunately led to an increase in the number of people that are becoming victims of various online scams, and this includes the increasingly prevalent number of hoax emails that are being sent.
Telstra recently sent a warning out to consumers, reminding them of the dangers of these hoax emails. The measure was taken after a number of reports revealed that consumers had been receiving hoax emails that were claiming to be from BigPond. Telstra said that the hoax email was one of thousands that get into circulation across Australia each year.
Telstra stated: “Telstra urges people to be very suspicious of emails sent by people unknown to them, containing misspelt words or directing them to a link. These hoax emails are often malicious and designed to obtain private information such as credit card details and passwords, or potentially expose your computer to a damaging virus. The best advice is to ignore and delete these messages.”
The company added: “Telstra and BigPond will never send an email requesting passwords, account verification, credit card details or other personal details by asking you to ’click on a link. You should only provide this type of information in response to an expected request or one you have initiated. We have also established a page at www.bigpond.com/help/ContactUs/MisuseService where customers can report hoax emails that appear to be from Telstra or BigPond.”
