Senior citizens could soon be getting support from Telstra to allow them to better understand computers, mobile phones and other modern communications technology.

Telstra are now offering Telstra Connected Seniors® grants of as much as $50 000 to community groups so they can provide seniors with help and support to better understand and use the communications technologies, like mobile phones and home computers, that are currently available.

State and territory organisations will be provided with grants of as much as $50 000, whilst local community organisations will be allowed grants of up to $5 000. Telstra has advised that 5PM AEST on March 5th will be the latest that any community groups that are eligible can apply for these Telstra Connected Seniors® grants.

The forthcoming Telstra Connected Seniors® will be ideally suited to any seniors who are looking to overcome the fears they have of new technology according to Ms Glenice McLellan, the acting group managing director for Telstra Consumer.

Ms Mclellan advised “We understand some seniors may be a little apprehensive about using new technology. However the reality is that mobile phones and computers are simple to use and they open up a whole new world of communication which can be easily embraced.”

She went on to add “No-one is ever too old to learn about technology and people are always surprised at just how much they can easily do online, like banking, shopping, finding out about new interests and joining social groups. Telstra Connected Seniors® workshops are conducted in a friendly and inviting environment where seniors can learn at their own pace alongside friends and neighbours. Attendees will also learn how to send and receive emails and text messages, which is the ideal way to keep in touch with family members – both young and old!”
