Unlimited downloads promised by new broadband provider
The recent unveiling of the newest provider of broadband in Australia has appeared in the form of a company that until now has been predominantly know for supplying smaller regional and rural communities with free WiFi access. myKP, a Sydney based telco will utilise the current council infrastructure by leveraging its existing partnerships to deliver access to broadband in any way it can, and will start by charging $79.95 a month for a single broadband service offering unlimited downloads.
The current strategy is to offer free Wi-Fi access to various councils and then buddy-up with them to get access to connectivity, facilities and building in return said George Kaloudis, the Director of Stuff at myKP.
Sydney areas including Lane Cove and Pittwater will become the new areas that myKP will be launching along with the regional councils in Albury-Wodonga, Ivanhoe, Wilcannia, Gilgandra, Central Darling and Coonamble.
Kaloudis said “There are roughly 22 councils we’re working with, they’ll get first dibs. Part of the initial limited release is really to test out some of the stuff we’re doing.”
A complete shake up of the industry is something that the director of myKP openly admits his company is working towards. With plans that reach well beyond that of regional council, myKP is shunning business models that depend on traditional ULLS or resale. A pick-and-mix approach to peering relationships, access technologies and backhaul providers is something that the company has spent the last three years creating.
User of myKP broadband will have the option of anything from fixed wireless access courtesy of an antenna on the roof, ADSL or ADSL2+ depending on where they live. The 26th January will see the launch of a platform that offers a single plan offering downloads free of quotas for a price of $79.95, which will be called ‘hero’. Service like Telephony and audio and video content services are also likely to become available at a later stage.
Kaloudis said “It’s time Australian Internet users had the access they’ve been asking for. We promised you myKP was more than just Free Wi-Fi. Our Wi-Fi communities have enthusiastically supported myKP and will be the first to benefit, thanks largely to the innovative Local Councils and community groups that have supported our community project.”
