A recent announcement was made be telecoms provider based in Canberra that its network will be undergoing infrastructure upgrades to allow it to offer its customers super fast broadband speeds of up to four times higher than the current 24Mbps ADSL2+ speeds using VDSL2.

The latest upgrade that will be carried out on its network that will take it up to the VDSL broadband standard was recently announced by TransACT, the Canberra based broadband provider.

These upgrades will increase the speed of its customer’s broadband connection by as much as four times that of an ADSL2+ network, which offers top speeds of 24Mbps, according to claims from the telco. The amount that was going to be spent on upgrading the network of the exact top speeds that could be reached by the new network was something that a spokesperson for the telco was unable to specify.

Some of the sites like Skyplaza in Woden had already had the upgrade work carried out in the area, and by the end of June there would be “additional” sites being upgraded, although whether this meant that all of or just a part of the rest of the intended upgrade was again something that the spokesperson could not advise on.

The provision of pricing of the new services was also unavailable. An investment into the rollout of Fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) to thousands of households in estates all over the territory using a gigabit passive optical network (GPON) had recently been made, said the company.

In a statement Ivan Slavich, the CEO for TransACT said “Through this VDSL2 upgrade program and the roll-out of FTTH to selected new suburbs, TransACT is heavily investing in Canberra to ensure that the broadband access we provide is first-class.”

With a state-based bid entered by TransACT, it is currently one bidders with a tender entered for the building of the governments National Broadband Network expected to cost $4.7 billion.
