Website launched to keep children of Australia safe when online

A website has recently been launched by the Australian government, with the aim being to keep Australian children safe when online and giving teachers extra resources when it comes to online education.

It has been announced by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy that a new website has been launched with some specific aims when it comes to Internet usage and education. The aim of the website is not only to help children in Australia but also to assist teachers, given that broadband and computers have become such an integral part of children’s lives and educations.

There are a couple of main aims to the newly launched government websites, which is www.cybersmart.gov.au. The first is to help ensure that children and kept safe when online, which is an issue that concerns most parents and teachers these days. The second aim is to provide valuable resources to teachers when it comes to internet safety educational resources.

Senator Conroy recently stated: “Although the internet has undoubtedly opened up a world of possibilities and benefits to Australian children, it has also exposed them to continually emerging and evolving dangers that did not previously exist. This website will provide parents, teachers, trainee teachers, librarians and children with up-to-date, comprehensive and age-appropriate online cybersafety resources and assistance. Tackling cybersafety means helping parents and teachers as well as educating children.”

The Youth Advisory Group is a group that will be consulted with regards to improvements to the website as it moves forward. Senator Conroy went on to stated: “The Cybersmart website is part of a national cyber-safety education initiative being implemented by ACMA. The program aims to give children, their parents and teachers sound advice on how to best manage online risks so their experiences are safe and positive.”
