Aussie broadband trends outlined in report

A recent report has outlined the current trends amongst broadband users in Australia, and has shown the rising popularity of mobile broadband services.

A new study that has recently been carried out by the Australian Communications and Media Authority has shown that the role of mobile broadband services in Australia have been growing, and a large number of people now use mobile devices to access broadband and get online. For many people being able to get online whilst out and about is vital, and this applies to not only business users but also general users that simply want updates, want to catch up with friends, and want to get the information that they wherever they are.

The report suggested that mobility is playing a growing role in terms of voice, broadband access, and application areas. Mobile broadband subscriptions were found to have risen to nearly twelve and a half million, reflecting an increase of around forty three percent since 2008. In 2009 there were over twenty four million mobile subscribers, which was an increase of nine percent compared to 2008.

The report also said that wireless services were playing an increasingly important role when it came to broadband access in Australia, and found that wireless now represented twenty five percent of all broadband subscriptions. With wireless and mobile services playing an increasingly pivotal role officials are now wondering how much emphasis should be put on fixed line broadband compared to mobile services with regards to the National Broadband Initiative.

Figures from the study also showed that an estimated fifty six percent of mobile phone owners in Australia had a handset that was capable of accessing 3G services. Around a third of users said that they used other data services other than texting.
