In order to establish a regulatory framework for the NBN Co Limited, the National Broadband Network company, the federal government recently released exposure drafts of legislation.
The Telecommunications Legislation Amendment (National Broadband Network Measures – Access Arrangement) Bill 2010 and the National Broadband Network Companies Bill 2010 are two of the bills that have been released in the exposure drafts.

Research published by broadband comparison website www.broadbandexpert.com.au, has found Australian Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are delivering less than 50 percent of the download speeds spruiked in broadband plans.
Over the last six months (1 July 2009 – 31 December 2009), Broadband Expert has collected data from 11,089 speed tests which make miserable reading for Internet users. The research asked consumers what the maximum ‘up to’ speed advertised from their broadband plan was and compared this to the actual speed achieved on Broadband Expert’s speed test.

Just eight months after its creation the third largest telecommunications company in Australia, Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA) has said that it is now putting serious pressure on its second place rival Optus.
Following its merger with Vodafone back in June 2009 that gave it a profit of $587.3 million the other half of VHA, Hutchison Telecommunications (Australia) Ltd recently announced a net profit for the year up to December 31st of $467.7 million.

Following recent upgrades to its HSPA+ broadband network the telecommunications giant Telstra has announced the launch of world first Dual Carrier Network and in order to take full advantage of these incredible new speeds it has also launched the first wireless broadband device to be used over its upgraded network.
With an ever increasing demand for smart devices many mobile carriers have had to work hard to provide smart networks that will accommodate the increased demand for wireless services said David Thodey, the CEO for Telstra.

The laying of new fibre optic backbone links along 6000 kilometers of land across Australia could see many families living in rural blackspot areas throughout the country able to access high-speed broadband internet services.
One of the main goals of the National Broadband Network is to provide high-speed broadband access to the majority of the Australian population and in order to do this it is beginning to build on the country’s existing broadband backbone network. This new fibre optic backbone project will see a number of underserved and unserved areas of the country gaining access to the high-speed broadband connection that most users in the metropolitan parts of the country already have.
