Australians continue to try and strike balance between work and home life

It has been reported by the broadband and communications giant Telstra recently that many small business owners and employees are continuing to try and strike a more healthy balance between their work and home lives by working from home.

As anyone that has ever started up a small business will know it can be a hard, long slog to kick start the business and owners of these businesses generally have to put in many hours. However, according to a recent report from the communications and broadband giant Telstra more and more small business owners and employees are trying to strike a healthier balance between their work and home lives by working more from home.

IDC carried out research on behalf of Telstra Business and the results showed that small businesses had become increasingly mobile, with technology such as mobile broadband, smart phones, and high speed broadband enabling people from small businesses to work whilst out and about or work from home. This means that they can enjoy far greater flexibility when it comes to work and can therefore maintain a healthier balance between their work and home lives.

One Telstra official said: “The lines between home and office are increasingly blurred –in fact a large proportion of our customer base actually works from home. And they’re not what you might imagine a home-based business to be.  Usually we’re talking about fast-growing start-ups playing a vital role in our economy.  They are using the internet to target their products and services to a global market. Other research we have run has shown they are often run by women who have set up their own businesses to conveniently re-enter the workforce or to escape corporate life.  Similarly, we’re seeing people setting up regional-based businesses as they seek a sea-change or tree-change escape.”
