Australian broadband and communications giant, Telstra, has announced the four Australian research projects that have been crowned winners in this year’s Telstra Innovation Challenge. The winners include an internet video searching project, an online health consultation project, an advanced computer network protection project, and an advanced speech recognition project.

The programmes that won the challenge were the RMIT University  – Real time stress and emotion recognition in speech, Specialist Link – e-health for allied health, iWebGate – DMZ in a box, and Seecue – Text indexing and search of video.

Dr Hugh Bradlow from Telstra said: “The Telstra Innovation Challenge was set up last year as a way for Telstra to contribute to and assist Australian researchers and innovators and the response to the program and the quality of submissions has been gratifying.” He added: “This year’s winners are a clear example of what Australian researchers and innovators are capable of and are a reflection of the first-class applications we received. The diversity of these projects highlights a variety of ways in which telecommunication networks and technologies can be applied to benefit a range of industries and communities – from the health sector to businesses and online consumers. With Telstra’s assistance, we hope these projects will meet their full potential and become commonly used tools. While there are a lot of great visions out there, a helping hand is often needed to get an idea to market. Telstra is happy to be able to help by providing technical assistance, access to our world-class networks, technology, marketing, facilities and internal experts who are often the world leaders in their field.”
