3G Wireless Modem
In order to connect to the 3G mobile network, which has until recently been used just for mobile phones, a device known as a 3G modem will be required. A 3G modem is available in three different formats, which are the USB 3G Modem, the USB dongle and the PC data card. A number of mobile broadband providers like Optus, Dodo, Telstra BigPond and other similar providers offer access to their mobile broadband networks using a 3G wireless modem.
Choosing a 3G Modem
Deciding on the most suitable 3G modem to use is something you will need to do when choosing a mobile broadband provider to use. In many cases you will be limited in terms of the types of 3G modem devices you can obtain from certain providers, with the increasingly popular 3G USB modems and the USB dongles being offered but not the PC data cards. The compatibility of the 3G USB modems and the USB dongles with almost every computer system is the biggest reason for them being so popular, whereas the PC Data card modems are only useable on laptops, which limits their compatibility.
Using your 3G Modem
No matter which 3G modem you choose, the way they work will be almost identical. On receiving your chosen modem you will find in the box your 3G modem device, a small SIM card that is similar to the one mobile phones use and if you decided on a 3G USB modem dongle you will receive a number of USB cables that will allow you to plug in your modem. Each 3G modem has a slot that you can plug the SIM card into which is the part of the modem that allows to get onto your chosen mobile provider's 3G network. Most 3G modems contain all the necessary software pre-loaded on the modem and when plugged into your computer will either install automatically or will provide simple step-by-step instructions onscreen, although some 3G modems come with install CD 's instead. All that is required to access the internet once the software has loaded is to run the connection software and click on connect.
What are the benefits of the 3G modem?
Unlike internet access using a fixed-line broadband connection where you are restricted by your location, a 3G modem will allow you to access the internet with almost limitless freedom. For anyone who needs to move around on a regular basis a 3G modem allows you to go almost anywhere and still be able to access the internet. Even if you are not regularly mobile there is still the benefit of the tiny amount of space that a 3G modem takes up when compared to fixed-line broadband connections and the modems, router and cabling that come with it, which, for users who have limited space to use their system, is ideal. Users who live in locations where fixed-line broadband is either not available or is simply too slow will also find that using a 3G modem to access the net an invaluable choice.
